Autumn in Bloom!

The other day I was wondering if anything
was blooming in my yard.

So I did a walk-around and below is what I found:

On my deck, the Impatiens are still blooming!

And the Vincas below have a few blooms.

I think the butterfly is heading for the pink bloom.

In the backyard, the Red Pine Cone Ginger Lillies are all blooming!
.

In the front yard, the American Beautyberry has lots of color.

And the Melampodium, too.

I've never seen this Lantana in my yard before,

but I'm glad it's there!

Fettucine with Zucchini & Pecans

I saw this recipe for Fettucine with Zucchini and Pecans in the
October 2011 Southern Living magazine
and it looked good!

No meat and I could use some of my pecans.

Below, the fettucine noodles are cooking on the back burner.
The pecans are toasting in front.

The large skillet on the right has the butter, olive oil & garlic simmering.

I shredded two zucchini.

Then sauteed the shredded zucchini till tender.

Asiago cheese and basil are then added to the zucchini.

The recipe called for fresh basil, but whenever I get fresh herbs,
it seems that I only use part of them and
the rest go bad.

Here's the meal, ready to eat.
The first night, the asiago cheese flavor was very strong.
The second night, it was weaker, thank goodness.

I read that parmesan cheese could be substituted
for asiago cheese,
which I may try next time I make this.

Walking Water

I saw this Walking Water experiment on Pinterest
and wanted to show it to my grandchildren
when I see them in October.

First, I wanted to try it out at home.

Below you will see hour by hour photos
of the water "walking" from one cup, down
the paper towel, to the empty cup.

All the blue colored water is in the top cup

After a couple of hours, the blue water
had traveled this far. Keep scrolling down
to see the blue water "walking" to the empty cup.

Not yet . . .

Almost there. . .

It finally reached the bottom cup!

I am going to ask the grandchildren how
long they think it will take for the blue water to reach the
empty cup. Also, if we mark the paper towel
with yellow marker, will we see a different color?
And we can try different colors on the paper towel, etc.
Science is fun!

Bolthouse Farms

Bolthouse Farms salad dressing is my new favorite!

Creamy yogurt dressing, farm style.

Less fat, fewer calories and the price isn't high.

I've only tried the Classic Ranch, and it is delicious!

You'll find it in the refrigerated section by the salad bags at Publix.

Didn't see it at Walmart.

Bolthouse Farms also has a line of vinaigrettes next to the salad dressings.

Each bottle has a "best if used by" date. The first bottle I picked up had

an October date on it. I checked some bottles farther back and got one for December.

But this December bottle is going to be empty before October gets here!

Yum!

Funny Things Around Town

Who wants to take a 26 day tour of Americus GA (population 17,000)?
Way too long!

Near my home, these tennis shoes have been hanging
on a telephone or utility line for about a year.

Today, I noticed that nearby another pair of shoes has
joined these shoes, but I couldn't get a good photo
of both pairs.

Ya Get What Ya Pay For!

I like going to Dollar Tree--everything is the same low price!

When I saw face wipes there, I was so glad, I bought two packs!

Now I only had to pay $1.00 for wipes instead of the $3 or $4 dollars
that I usually pay for them at Publix or Target.

But my new discovery disappointed me!

These cheap face wipes are terrible!
They are so flimsy that I couldn't even wipe my face with them.

They are now in my car to use to clean my hands and they don't
do a very good job of that.
Maybe I'll use them to dust the dashboard.

See this package below--do not buy these!

Halfway through the cheap wipes, I couldn't stand them any longer.

I bought my usual ones and didn't mind spending the $3+ for them.

Buy these!

What's Growing in the Garden

We were away from home for almost three weeks.
When we got back , I was happy to see that my Hurricane Lily was blooming!
Karen gave me the bulb for this plant years ago and it blooms in late summer.
It grows up to 18" tall and has no leaves, as you can see.

Here's another plant (below) that did something
(at least it didn't die like some of my plants did) while we were gone.
It's a flowering bulb of some kind (I'll know when it blooms).
What it did was push its shoots through the leaves that were on top of the dirt--
just speared right through them. Wasn't going to let a leaf stop it from growing!

Yesterday the weather was so nice!
My outdoor thermometer shows it was almost 70 degrees.
Perfect for working outside in the yard.
I had some of the windows open during the day
and could feel Mother Nature's free air conditioning
coming in the windows. It was so nice!
